Why can I not shut my fan off in my fancoil?

Your fancoil may not only provide heating and cooling to your suite, but fresh air as well. If you are living in a newer condo (last 10yrs) It may be integrated together with your bathroom exhaust fan tied into an ERV or HRV system. These systems employ a constant run blower that continuously circulates fresh air into your suite.

WHAT IS AN ERV?

Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) is an energy recovery process of exchanging the energy contained in normally exhausted building or space air and using it to treat (precondition) the incoming outdoor ventilation air in residential and commercial HVAC systems.

  • Provides oxygen for occupants since people deplete oxygen as they breathe. In a reasonably airtight home with no ventilation, you would feel the effects of that in quite short order.

  • Removes contaminants – because along with the toxins emitted by the human body (ammonia, benzene, carbon monoxide and methane to name but a few), chemicals in building materials and furnishings continue to off-gas for many years after installation.

  • Removes the excess humidity generated by normal human activity in order to ensure building durability and efficiency in heating.

Simply put it takes your bathroom exhaust and uses it to heat (winter) or cool (summer) fresh air it brings in from outside saving you money by conditioning outdoor air.
